A lot is happening at Broadway In Chicago!
I had to fly out for a one day turnaround to see a show and meet with producers. This is a show that will knock your socks off! It’s so much fun but I can’t give you more details than that right now. Today we had producers come in to tour all the venues for a new show that they are thinking of bringing to Chicago FIRST! Sounds spectacular and we made sure they all know that Chicago is fond of being first. What’s great about touring new producers around Chicago is that they fall in love with the city. What is not to love? And we always credit Mayor Daley for all the beautiful flowers and parks and our forefathers who had the foresight to not build on the lake. Everybody loves Chicago – even Elton John has Chicago fever!
SPRING AWAKENING is still with us but only for one more week – you must stop what you are doing and go. It is one of those shows that you don’t want to miss. JERSEY BOYS has really been busy with summer tourists and is now planning its second anniversary! We have meetings this week with THE ADDAMS FAMILY; it is great to be able to present a world premiere pre-Broadway production. We are also looking forward to YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN with some of the original Broadway stars Roger Bart and Shuler Hensley.
What a fall we have shaping up!
Rain, rain, go away! While it has not seemed like summer, it has definitely been theatre weather. All the tourists come to the theatre when the clouds roll in. I am hoping that there has been enough sunny weather for them to have a great time at the park and all of the other sites of Chicago and then on to the theatre for a real memorable experience: JERSEY BOYS & SPRING AWAKENING.
Yes, SPRING AWAKENING opens tomorrow night. I have to admit this is one of my favorite shows. It is so moving and well done – and gorgeously performed by talented young people who will be lighting up the stage for years to come. I am sure that some might be shocked by my choice but I think that it is the perfect musical to share with your progressive family. I know that my college age kids all loved it and it reinvigorated their love of theatre. And as a Mom that made me happy. This isn’t the show for the younger siblings but it is the show that will make you a hero with your 20 something children. It is simply breathtaking.

I cannot begin to describe how excited I am to be returning to my hometown, Chicago with Spring Awakening!!! I was introduced to so many great shows in Chicago. I would beg my Mom for tickets to anything. I think one of the first things I saw, Ragtime, was actually in the Oriental where we will be playing, so I really feel like this year has come full circle for me. It’s been such a crazy experience and it has gone by so fast. It was about a year ago we began rehearsals and then made our first move to San Diego and then opened in San Francisco (I had never been to California before, and now I can’t wait to go back!)
I have been all over the country, (and Canada too!!!) and have seen so many cool things. I can’t wait however to take my cast mates out and show them what Chicago has to offer!!! One of my favorites places has to be Oak Street Beach, and we are lucky enough to be going when it’s beach season!!! I keep telling them how surreal it is to be walking about the busy city and then head over to this awesome beach that’s right in the middle of all the commotion. I used to go downtown to the beach when I was in high school. We’d soak up some rays, grab a bite and shop around for a bit before heading back to the ’burbs. I am also excited to go back to the Adler Planetarium. If I wasn’t an actor, Id like to think I would have ended up an astronaut. (Hey, anything can happen, right?) I am so glad to be able to share this great city with my friends on tour. Chicago is also bittersweet because for a couple of people, this is their final stop. I know I will miss them tremendously but I am so glad we got to share in this amazing journey together. Hopefully we’ll add a couple more memories here in Chicago.

I’m rocking a Jersey Boys tank-top tan right now…and I actually kinda love it. Thanks, Jersey Boys.
Okay, I’m not gonna lie to you…standing out on the street and handing out summertime swag (really really CUTE swag, mind you!) has plenty of shortcomings: It’s hot. It’s sweaty. Sometimes you bump into your awkward Junior Prom date who now lives in the city (WHO KNEW?!) and there’s nowhere to hide! Bad times.
But it’s mostly a whole lot of fun! Interns are usually cubicle-captives at their summertime jobs. At BIC we get to be outside, exploring the city and interacting with random Chicago theater-lovers (sidebar: despite what your parents told you as kids, talking to strangers is an amazing character study…for all you actors out there!). Who wants to be cooped up in the office all day when you could be out enjoying the beautiful weather?!
Plus, need I repeat my love for the oh-so-attractive tank-top tan that results from standing on Michigan Avenue all afternoon in July?! Rich.
And who doesn’t love getting free stuff?! We pass out everything from CD samplers to fans to temporary tattoos and discount coupons! So if you see some friendly twenty-somethings all decked out in Jersey Boys & Spring Awakening apparel, handing out swag…come on over and say hi! And grab a fan to cool off. Trust me, they’re a lot of fun.
